A message that shows or pops up on a mobile device, windows or desktop is known as a push notification. The notification mostly appears at the top of the device if its a mobile or at the side if it is windows and its has to be connected to the internet. Advertisements that pop up in your web browser are push notifications too.
Push notifications were invented by Matias Duarte who was working as a Director of Design at Danger, this was back in 2008. Danger was the predecessor to Android. Duarte did not invent all by himself, but he had a team whereby they worked together, named Danger Team. At that time, there was no such name as notifications, people referred to them as alerts and later on, they were named new message notifications.
During this time, the only alerts people got were voicemails, text messages or missed calls. However, app developers had to come up with a method that easily lured people into downloading the apps that were under development. Danger’s team seized the opportunity and had to come up with a system that had the capabilities of notifying the market about the apps that had been developed.
It conducted research and came up with an analysis of how frequently everyone was learning something new as well as the location. Danger’s team decided that social media was the best area to attract the attention of a bigger percentage of the targeted market. But at this point, social media was just web diaries or news, and frequency was a six-hour timeline. The team developed notifications and were given different names such as coupons, personal organizers, as well as card greetings. Having done that successfully, they decided to open up the platform to outside app makers. The goal was to find a way to find their own custom icon and preview.
In their thoughts, these messages were the best way through which people would be in touch, updated or connected with what was happening. During this time, the concern on everybody’s mind was all about sounds, since every notification message made a ‘bing’ sound. Many were uncomfortable with the issue dwelling in their minds that vibrations at that point were not invented.
Later, the banner notification on mobile phones ideology was chosen to be the best; the reason being that the larger percentage of the population was chatting simultaneously. With this invention, developers strive to have the ability to push their messages, ability to create their own icon, as well as being able to create as many notifications as possible. This revolution came at a point where the team created a Notification Center, where anyone went to check all of their unchecked notifications. In June 2009, Apple introduced an update for its iPhone series where Apple offered its customers a new experience. The new experience was Apple’s version of the push notification, called APNS, Apple Notification Service. Here, users get alerts from Apple and also from the ecosystem of apps known as small utilities.
Push in no time became the default way through which people interacted with the entire mobile device. Apple’s iPhone series improvement took the push notifications agenda mainstream, widespread as well as acceptable. After the birth of Google Android phones, this method of notifying users was adopted. This led to a rise in usage of push, and other alerts like personal organizers were slowly leading to inactivity.
Google developed software known as Google Cloud Messaging, or GCM, in August 2013. GCM introduced push notifications to browsers for the first time, which changed the methods used in advertising. Although it was created for free use by all Android users, Google made sure that it featured in its widespread browser, Chrome. Later on, GCM was updated to Firebase Cloud Messaging or FCM, where app developers saw potential opportunities for technological advancement and started sending push notifications through the software.
Once it was difficult for users to be informed about new apps and precious information. This has been rendered easy by the creation and development of push notifications. Now you can read a magazine in real time, read breaking news, source information from different sources. App developers and marketers can easily advertise their products online as well as drive a big percentage of people to their websites. They can also reach their targeted market easily, for example the youths, through the use of push notifications.
